BLIND SUMMIT EXTREME PUPPETRY WORKSHOP
We will spend two days exploring three person puppetry improvisation. Improvisation is
at the core of all Blind Summit's work. We use it to devise new work, to manipulate the
puppets, to create new puppet characters, and as a way to make sure our
performances are alive and fresh.
On this today course we will work with objects and puppets, alone and in groups, to
learn and revise the basic skills and principles of puppetry. We will cover how to make
the audience look at the puppet, how to make it look at things, who to make it breathe,
and move. We will look at the role of the puppeteer in puppetry, how to be visible to the
audience and to be invisible to the audience. We will look at how a group of puppeteers
can work together to become one group while also acting always as individuals within
that group. At the heart of this technique is the idea of leading and following, constantly
changing from one to the other so that the leadership is always changing, and how to
use this in your puppetry. We will discuss the role of genre as the puppet equivalent of
character and how to use this so that three people working together on one puppet can
have the same intention for the puppet. And we will cover how to think about motivation
in puppetry.
