On the Theater of the Marionettes
For AdultInspired in the essay of same name by Heinrich von Kleist.
My German speaking mother always called me "Puppe", "Puppele" when I was a child. According to Webster's dictionary the English translation of 'Puppe" is "pupa", a stage between the larval and adult forms in insects, a girl, doll, puppet, a human being between infancy and adulthood, a toy (puppet) occupying a position between animate matter ( human resemblance) and inanimate substance ( artificial construct). As an adult it is as a fragmented hybrid object/puppet/ performer where I feel most at home with myself, a state when I spread my wings and fly.
Inspired by Heinrich von Kleist I use gravitation to express ideas of identity, self actualization and freedom. My protagonist Mr K plans his life in the Army, Classical Ballet and Fencing. But each time the regulated training exercises throw him out of balance and he falls. A succession of operations replace his broken limbs by prosthetic wooden ones. Just before the last surgical operation, under the effects of anaesthetic a dream reveals to Mr K that he must wake up and escape or become a soulless dead marionette.
